LG OLED 65B8 No video HDR content [Solved Bad Quality HDMI Cable]

Ok put the previous test build on that @cdu13a posted.

Had to type ./dispinfo2.sh as dispinfo on its own wouldn’t work this time round on this version.

System config logs - http://ix.io/1Gbj

Display GUI set to 1920x1080p 60hz refresh rate nothing works apart from 24fps sample.

If I switch the GUI display to 4096x2160p 24hz they all work but some samples Kodi stutters although GUI is responsive. HDR shows up on tv at start of play on all but the 30 FPS samples. However if I am reading the logs properly they are staying in 8 bit output and not 10 bit.

When we put the test build on before we didn’t do any dispinfo to show if it was 8 bit or 10 bit still all we know is content started to play.

If I turn off the deep colour on the tv it turns it back on again.

Here’s logs:

Dispinfo with nothing playing - http://ix.io/1Gbl
Dispinfo with nothing playing but 4k GUI - http://ix.io/1GbA

24fps - Samsung Wonderland Two

Any thoughts anyone?

Just to be clear:

  1. With standard settings on your box running CE 9.0.1 and TV, you loose signal during playback of all the samples?
  2. With standard settings on your box running CE 9.0.1 and TV in addition to enabling 4:2:2, you loose signal during playback of all the samples except for “24fps - Samsung Wonderland Two”?
  3. With standard settings on your box running (funhouse): devel-1549211042" and TV, you don’t loose signal during playback of any of the samples?

Sorry I have maybe not been clear:

  1. Correct
  2. Correct
  3. With GUI set to 1920x1080p 60hz refresh rate nothing works apart from 24fps sample.

So now you’re saying that previous images didn’t work either?
Setting GUI to 4096x2160p is not a valid test of whether things work or not because no autoswitching occurs in such a case, and you’re limited to 24Hz and 8 bits.

@richardc1983, which versions did work? Do you recall that?

cdu13a will have a new dev build you can test soon which hopefully fixes the issue for you. However, as most of the resources are tied to Odroid N2 you have to be patience  Use your TV’s internal mediaplayer for playback of 4K HDR in the meantime :+1:

Previously on the build we were never told to submit dispinfo, and as I have never done that before I would not have known to do that.

All I could say was that it worked, so with that switch set on it was just keeping everything in 8 bit.

I was referring to your #3 answer where you said it doesn’t work with the “funhouse” build either.
Anyway, I personally don’t see any reason for it not to work according to the logs you posted. I highly doubt that you are the only user with a 2018 LG OLED, and you seem to be the only one having issues with CE right now.
I think that there’s not much we can do about the problem at this stage, as none of us have this TV model. Until we get more feedback from 2018 OLED users (either positive or negative) we’ll have to leave this issue open.

@richardc1983, in the meantime, you can try to change the CEC settings in hope that this easy solution might fix it. From Kodi settings - System - Input - Peripherals - CEC.

Try different settings and combinations. Start with the following and tweak it while testing with standard settings on your box running CE 9.0.1 and TV.

  • Switch source to this device on startup Enabled
  • Devices to power on/off were disabled, changed to TV
  • Send “Inactive source” command on shutdown enabled
  • Put devices in standby mode when activating the screensaver enabled
  • Wake devices when deactivating the screensaver enabled

Tried various settings you’ve suggested and all do the same. :frowning:

In fact the volume control has disappeared now.

Hi.
I have the same problem as richardc1983

LG oled65C8 model 2018

CE 9.0.1

GUI 1920x1080p 50 / 60Hz

  • does not play 4K HDR 24p video, only the link at the top right of HDR is shown and HDMI input is not active

GUI 4096x2160p 24Hz
-play 4K HDR videos, but 1080p video at 50/60 Hz is not smooth

LE 8.2.3.1

GUI 1920x1080p 50 / 60Hz
-Play 4K-24Hz and 1080p 24/50/60 are ok

This might be your problem. TVs don’t work well with this resolution. Use 3840x2160p 59.94hz. Then things will be smooth.

I was told to use 1080p nothing higher?

I thought the GUI resolution didn’t affect the video playback.
The resolution in GUI 3840x2160p cannot be set, HDMI signal is not active.

Kodi doesn’t switch resolution if the GUI resolution is higher than video resolution, if you don’t configure the whitelist. Now, since 4096x2160 is also limited to 24Hz, Kodi won’t be able to switch refresh rate either. And in addition to that, you’re stuck at 8-bit color depth.
So this results in the whole auto cs\cd switching not working at all.

And disregarding all of the above, 4096x2160 is higher than the native resolution of all UHD TVs and the actual “4K” content that is available, which is 3840x2160. This introduces upscaling by CE in order for the video to fill the screen, followed by either overscan which will crop the sides or underscan which will scale the video back down on the TV, because it can’t display a 4096 pixel wide image.

Are you setting the GUI 3840x2160p at 50 / 60Hz, if so can you play a 4k 50 / 60hz file and do you get the same results.

Cannot set GUI resolution of 3840x2160p, HDMI signal is not active. I do not know why?

The 1080p GUI should be set correctly and the 4K video should switch automatically. But I don’t see the video image and I have to restart the box.

Box:
X96 S905X 2G
CoreElec 9.0.1

when I install LibreElec 8.2.3.1 the video plays correctly.

@Xander80 LibreELEC is irrelevant. The problem also has nothing to do with video playback, it’s with changing display modes.

If you turn on the following, video should playback just like in LibreELEC.
Settings / System / CoreELEC / limit 8bit

Yes it works.

Is it a solution?
Kodi can’t play 10bit depth.

The limit 8bit and force 422 settings are both work around for a few TVs and AVRs that are a little quirky about their support for 10bit colour.

Unfortunately trying to make the greater then 8bit colour, different types of HDR and some variants of the 4k modes work right with every single TV and AVR without breaking stuff with other TVs and AVR is rather challenging. Especially when I don’t have access to all these different TVs or the HDMI signal testing equipment, that would be required to try and make it closer to perfect for everybody.
