Problems with Movies and TV Shows

On your Videos page, what happens when you click Movies and TV shows listed under media sources? Where did you get artwork on Movies and TV shows sources links/buttons?
I don’t have eithe of those on Kodi Mac, which contributes to confusion. Kodi Mac adds my folders as Media sources, displays Movies and TV shows links/buttons under Categories, not under Media Sources.
This is maddening!!! I have to learn 2 different GUIs, and one is confusing enough.
Kodi Mac lists Video Playlists under Media Sources,
Kodi CoreELEC has Playlists (without “Video”) listed in Categories alongside Files and Video Add ons. Media Sources are shown as Movies, TV shows and MyExternalHD.
What is this!
When I click Movies or TV shows in Media Sources, I get “…” back button. When I click it, I’m not taken back, but taken to some folder with a bunch of subfolders - backup, lost+found, music, pictures, screenshots, tv shows, videos. These look like Kodi software app os folders. When I click “…” back button there, I get Files, Playlists, Video Add Ons folders with no back “…”. Using keyboard (remote) goes back to Videos page.
This is madness. I have no idea if this is normal or screwed up, bcause it’s so completely different from Kodi app on Mac

This is after going into System Settings and resetting CoreELEC to defaults after which it rebooted.

Just a comment about system backup, yes it does create a tar file, you can choose a location, I use the backup folder under storage on the device, it will take about 5mins.

My tip would be to copy the tar file to another location, usb or network, so if you have to do a complete reload, you will still have the tar file

The artwork on Movies and TV shows sources links/buttons come from a file named “folder.jpg”. One each in the “Movies” and “TV” top level folders. Those are my own “creations”. In kodi, if you want to show specific fanart behind any folder, create a “fanart.jpg” file in that folder. If you want to show a poster for a folder, create a “folder.jpg” file.

If I remove them I get this:-

I never see any hard drive listed - I even plugged in an external hdd (backup of my D: drive with exact copy of all movies/tv shows and art) and it does not show up. I don’t see why it should be there.

If you go from “Videos” on main menu, then “Files”, I only see the same “Movies”, “TV”. If I click on those entries from here or from “Media Sources” on the home page, I am taken to the same place - i.e. my Movies or TV listings.

If you see your HD listed here (Videos->Files), can you not right-click on it and remove source? Is it something which is auto created by the Mac?

That’s how it is on Mac, except Movies and TV Shows are in Categoris not Media Sources. Did you create those Playslists?
On Mac when I click on Movies or TV it brings up a list of categories e.g. A-Z, Genre, etc. Click on one of those and it shows list just like clicking on A-Z, Genre, etc from the Movies or TV shows page, which is entirely rational.
So this is a Kodi on CoreELEC issue, yes?
or should I go post in Kodi forum? Are they going to boot me back over here?

Under the “userdata” folder, there should be a “sources.xml” file. Can you upload that here?

This will show what Kodi “thinks” its media sources are.

Right now, sounds like a Kodi on Mac issue - but lets see the sources.xml file.

If you look at my sources under the

Kodi Mac is working as should. It’s Kodi CoreELEC that shows HD as Media Source as soon as connected without any Media source defined.

Hold on - I do have an Android box here - not N2 but a S905X2 box attached to my TV. Let me look at that.

it has external hdd and is running Kodi.

Ok - hdd does show up on my TV but not on Windows kodi

My exteranl HDs are named 1.VIDEO and 2.VIDEO

And under videos->files, it does show up also.

Yeah, but when you click Movies and TV shows icons on Videos page what happens? Do you get nothig but back button “…”? Then click that back button - do you get a list of internal Kodi app folders or whatever the heck they are?

ok - i see the issue I think. the media sources for movies and tv shows are not pointing to your hdd - they are the default settings which point to the folders on the N2 box.

Right click on Movies and TV and set up the sources to point to your hdd Movies folder for movies source and TV folder for TV source.

I tried clicking “enter your files” or whatever the link is on Movies page when you have no files defined. It takes me to list that includes my HD and a “+Add Files” button, which when clicked does not reveal my HD so I can select folder on it and define folder as media source.
This is the root of the problem.
I can only click on HD instead of +Add Files and set content on folders, which doesn’t link files to Movies and TV links on Video page.
Then when I click Movies and TV links on Video page I get folder back button “…” nonsense, push back button, get list of internal Kodi app folders etc.

do you not have the default TV Shows and Movies entries along with your HD. I think if you right click on existing default TV Shows entry and then edit source, then browse for your hdd and then browse to top level tv folder and select that u should be ok.

Do same for movies.

you have to click browse from here:-

ah yes - after browse you then need to click on “root filesystem”, then “media” and then you should see your hdd

bit of a bugger that one. Forgot about that - been a long time, not very intuitive at all!

You tend to do these things only once and of course you forget these little nuances,

on windows (and probably the Mac?), the drive shows up on the first listing.

God I hope after all this we will see those damn nfo files populate your hdd when you export library to separate etc.

I cannot browse for HD because it’s not listed after clicking browse.
REPEAT - my HD is not in browse list so it cannot be selected as a media source and content set as Movies or TV, hence when Movies and TV categories (or media source) buttons are clicked, there’s nothing there but back button … that when clicked pulls up nonsensical operating/app folders.
I can only select my HD, then select folder, then define content.
I cannot select folder and add it as Media Source, so Kodi does not recognize anything when I click on Movies (or Videos) or TV buttons. I could swear it used to say Movies, but now says Videos after I selected my HD as Media Source from Videos page, then set content on folder.
Completely maddening because it’s so diff from Mac and diff each time I do something diff.
I even defined files from button on Movies page. Doing it that way yielded same mess. Still couldn’t browse to folder on my HD, could only set content of folder because HD was already recognized as Media source which screws up Movies (or Videos) and TV button links from Videos page
